Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Women in Turkey Transform the Tech Industry

"Participating in the program felt like solving a complex puzzle—each challenge brought me closer to a deeper understanding of myself and the value of working together," says Su Aladağ, a participant in Future Role Models, a technical and social skills training program supported by Ford Philanthropy and Ford Otosan and led by nonprofits, Young Guru Academy and UP School. Su's experience reflects the program's mission to give women the tools, knowledge, and confidence to step out of their comfort zones. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to deeply explore their interests to identify fulfilling careers.

In Turkey, where only 10% of tech roles are occupied by women, the program is paving the way for change.

Cultivating Community and Confidence

This past year, the Future Role Models program connected 1,480 female university students with tech leaders, offering a free, 9-week training that helped them emerge as well-rounded future leaders.

For Zeynep Sude Genç, a program participant, the experience was not just about gaining tech skills but also about building strong relationships. "We created a wonderful community, both among the girls and with the instructors," Zeynep shares. This sense of belonging played a key role in Zeynep's growth, highlighting the value of connection in both her personal and professional development.

The program also inspired participants like Ceren Önal, who was navigating the challenges of readjusting to social life. "After the earthquake, I turned my fear and anxiety into self-confidence, rediscovering myself through the support of the training," she reflects.

Amplifying Impact

The stories of women like Su, Zeynep, and Ceren showcase the transformative impact of the Future Role Models: Women in Tech program, empowering others to pursue their career goals with confidence. Ford employees, both in Turkey and worldwide, can support the program by raising awareness in their own communities and helping create a future where more women lead, innovate and inspire in the tech industry.
